HIKE THE "HERBERT J. ROES HISTORIC TRAIL"

HISTORY OF THE TRAIL  The idea for a "Camp Boyhaven Historic Trail" was first conceived in 1974 on the occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of Camp Boyhaven. A number of Scouters under the leadership of Ted Brown and Herb Roes developed The Historic Trail for a special fall Scout Camporee and provided hikers with a guidebook describing a dozen "historic sites" along the Trail. In 1984 and again in 1989 the Historic Trail was re-activated but only for special occasions. During the summer and fall of 1994, the Boyhaven Campmasters worked with Herb to resurrect The Trail and make it a year-round, self-directed activity for visitors to Camp Boyhaven. On October 30, 1994 The Boyhaven Historic Trail was re-dedicated at a ceremony held on the steps of the White House. Since that time, more than a thousand Scouts and Scouters have hiked The Trail and learned about the history of Camp Boyhaven.

SO YOU WANT TO HIKE THE TRAIL?

(1) Inform the Camp Ranger or Campmaster  If your group is camping at Boyhaven for the weekend, tell the Ranger or Campmaster at check-in when you would like to hike The Trail. If you're making a day-trip to Boyhaven, please contact the Camp Ranger by phone two or three days ahead of time (885-7800) to inform him of your hiking plans.

(2) Meet the Ranger or Campmaster at the "White House"  Enter the required information in the Historic Trail Log Book (Unit#, Council, District, leader's name and phone, number of participants, etc.). Obtain one copy of the Historic Trail Guidebook for each hiking group leader and one copy of the appropriate Question Sheet/Map for each participant.

(3) Hike the Historic Trail  Follow the map, Trail Guide descriptions, and yellow fleur-de-lis trail markers to visit all 24 historic sites in order. It will take about 2 ˝ hours. Group leaders are encouraged to read the descriptions of the sites to Scouts while they "explore" and listen for the answers to the questions.

• Keep groups small - Den and Patrol size (6-10)

• Encourage Scouts to work in pairs to find answers to the questions

• Encourage Scouts to follow the Historic Trail route on their maps

(4) Return to the White House  Check Scouts’ answers to the questions (but there is no requirement to "pass"). Purchase commemorative patches from the Ranger or Campmaster ($3.00 each. One patch per participant, please). These are "official" BSA patches and may be worn on the uniform's temporary insignia pocket. (Cash is fine. Make checks payable to "Twin Rivers Council").

Earn the "TRAIL Blazer" Award

Scouts and Scouters may earn the Camp Boyhaven "Trail Blazer" strip by doing four (4) hours or more of service work at Camp. The project may be carried out individually or as a team effort, but it must be pre-approved by the Camp Ranger. When the requirements have been met, these patches can be purchased from the Ranger for 50˘ each. Sew them on your uniforms right under the Boyhaven Historic Trail patch.
