The Boyhaven "Campmasters"
The "Campmasters" of Camp Boyhaven do not share the long history of the "Gophers" although the campmaster role has been played by many volunteers over the years. With encouragement and direction from Council Camping Chairman Jim Burgess, a Boyhaven Campmaster Corps was organized in the early 90’s. For several years a group of two dozen Schenectady and Saratoga District Scouters under the leadership of Bart Chabot worked with the four Camp Rangers who held that post during this period of time. Functioning both as Campmasters and as Gophers, these men realized many successes in program, construction and maintenance activities. The "Boyhaven Historic Trail" was re-opened, expanded to include a total of two dozen "stops" and is still operated on a full-time basis by the Camp Ranger with support from Friends of Camp Boyhaven. The garage on the back side of the White House was converted to a bedroom equipped with electric baseboard heat and insulated to the hilt. A number of Campmasters spent weekends at Camp assisting the Ranger with unit check-in and check-out and other administrative duties. And several Campmaster/Gopher "Spruce Up" weekends were held to keep up with the never-ending list of maintenance tasks. The Campmaster Corps disbanded in 1997. "CAMPMASTERS" TODAY On October 30, 1999 former Ranger Gus Boucher brought together a small group of Scouters at the White House to re-organize and reinvigorate the "Campmasters". A recruiting campaign is currently underway to attract new members to this important service operation. Camp Boyhaven needs YOU! CHARTER The primary function of the "Campmasters" is to support the Ranger in satisfying the program and administrative needs of Camp Boyhaven. Tasks may include spending a weekend at Camp as the Assistant Ranger, making the Herbert J. Roes Historic Trail available to visitors, checking units in and out of Camp, or tackling a small maintenance project.MEMBERSHIP Anyone can become a "Campmaster".
