North Pines
The
Health Lodge is nestled in a stand of pines named, appropriately, "North
Pines" since it's
located
in the north end of Camp. This is a favorite lean-to and tenting area for Scouts
who visit Boyhaven during winter and summer months alike. Winds whistle through
the tall treetops, dry twigs "snap" under nocturnal paws, owls
hoot-hoot... and Scouts snuggle
down in their sleeping bags!
Before the North Pines pine trees were planted in the 1940's, this was a pretty bare hill and a field with a good view. It was a great place to build signal towers for the Pioneering Merit Badge. Many Scouts lashed four long poles together with cross-bracing and diagonals to make tall towers from which messages could be sent across the valley. The view is gone now, and so are the skills in semaphore and Morse code.
