Horsley Training
Center
This
rustic log building was dedicated in 1976 as a training center for Scouts and
Scouters in honor of Mr. Walter Horsley. With ample classroom space for up to 40
students, Horsley Lodge provides an excellent location for District and Council
adult leadership training sessions as well as Scout Troop Junior Leader
Training. The building is equipped with a wood stove for keeping wintertime
classes warm, a small kitchen area in the back for meal preparation and coffee
brewing, a blackboard, and plenty of windows to look out when minds need to
wander. A very highly regarded January session of OKPIK winter camping skills
training is held here, attracting Troop and Crew leaders from all over Twin
Rivers Council. This winter-worthy lodge is also available to groups of up to 20
for cabin-camping.
Horsley Lodge or Horsley Training Center is named for Mr. Walter Horsley, the Scout Executive of Schenectady County Council from 1963 to 1972. Those who knew Walt recall that he was the type of leader who was always right in the middle of the work like roofing a lean-to or building new latrines. His work-leadership philosophy and roll-up-the-sleeves attitude were much appreciated and greatly respected by all who knew and worked with him.
