KLONDIKE DERBY '12 & DEEP FREEZE #49

January 20-22, 2012

READY, SET, GO! The Klondike Derby Staff will be ready for another Running of the Sledges on Saturday January 21, 2012. Hard-copy event brochures are no longer available.  We expect that someone in your Troop has a computer and printer at home and can generate copies of required documents.  Better yet, distribute the Camp Boyhaven website URL to everyone in the Troop, boys and adult leaders.  Everyone can have their own personal copy of the Event Information!

HOW DO WE PRE-REGISTER?  Complete a pre-registration postcard (mailed only to SDY and SWJ Scoutmasters) or send an e-mail to uncas@campboyhaven.org with your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, Troop number, District name, and the number of Derby Patrols you expect to enter in the event or give George a shout at 884-0588.  There is no cut-off date for pre-registration but be advised that the Klondike Derby competition is limited to 55 Patrols; first pre-registered, first served.  (There is no pre-registration fee!!).  Troops from outside the Schenectady and Sir William Johnson Districts are more than welcome to join us!  And from outside Twin Rivers Council, too!  (Troops attending this event in January '11 hailed from Southboro, MA and Gettysburg, PA.... The MAs and PAs!).

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?  The registration fee is $7 per person including adult leaders, payable at Registration (Nature Lodge) on Saturday, January 21.  Senior Scouts serving on the event staff as "Renegades" or Health & Safety Team members should be listed on the Registration Form but the registration fee is waived for these service-oriented Scouts.

CUB AND WEBELOS SCOUTS ARE INVITED TO OBSERVE THE "DERBY"

Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts, Pack leaders and parents - Packs, Dens or families - are invited to visit for all or part of the day on Saturday to observe the "Klondike Derby".  The action starts at 10:00 Saturday morning when the first Derby Patrols leave the starting line at Tyonek (Norris Hall) and ends at 4:30 when the Mayors shut down their cities.  Watch Boy Scout patrols demonstrate their skills in fire-building, ice rescue, winter first aid, emergency shelter-building, orienteering, racing their sledges, and preparing hot lunches over an open fire.

Register (NO FEES!) at "Wasilla" - the White House (front room) - anytime during the day.  Scouts receive free event patches!  Represented Packs will receive participation ribbons!  Parents and/or Pack leaders must accompany all visiting Cub and Webelos Scouts.  Dress warmly.  Bring your lunch or skip out to Saratoga Springs for pizza!  (Say "Hi" to the REAL Mayor of Wasilla - Terry Quintin!)  (Sarah who??)

Please note that this is NOT an overnight activity for Cub or Webelos Scouts.  Troops should NOT invite Cub or Webelos Scouts to spend the weekend with them. There will be NO activities for Cub or Webelos Scouts at Camp Boyhaven on Saturday except to OBSERVE the Klondike Derby events under the supervision of their parents and/or Pack leaders.

Even if there's LITTLE OR NO SNOW at "Klondikaven" on Saturday, January 21, Derby Patrols
are still expected to run their Derby Sledges.  We have had snow-less Klondike Derbies
in the past.  Retractable or removable WHEELS on sledges is the answer!!
